I've had another Fantom Drive for almost 10 years and it has worked flawlessly, quietly and cool. Being satisfied with the older drive I bought this newer model for the extra capacity and speed.The drive seems to work OK but I do notice occasional unresponsiveness which I'm not ready to blame the drive or macOS for it.On the other hand this newer model does not have a fan so it runs super hot. I have both drives hooked up to my laptop all the time and only the new one gets hot. The older one stays pretty much at room temperature.This may not be a big issue to everyone but keep that in mind as you decide where to put the drive. It emits enough heat to damage the finish on a wood table and possibly cause discoloration on other materials. It's also a sign of inefficient thermal design and excessive wasted energy. In addition to that, the heat will probably shorten the lifespan of the components in the drive. I just hope it doesn't fail, or fails within the 2-year warranty period. I have one more year under warranty.UPDATE: 5 days after I posted this my drive failed. I think its internal power supply or circuitry could not handle the heat because the drive isn't even turning on anymore. I'll contact support for a replacement but I really don't want to return the old one with my private data stored. I'll update again later.UPDATE2: Talked to support and I was told the warranty was 1 year, not 2. I'm still within one year so I asked for a replacement. I asked for authorization to open the enclosure, get my disk out and put in another enclosure to copy/delete the data. They agreed as long as I promised to not swap any part. Once I opened the enclosure I noticed a few components discolored (I'm assuming from the constant high heat) and some with severe signs of wear out. See attached picture. I was so displeased with what I saw that I decided to not request a replacement because I don't want to risk something like this, or worse - losing the data. The HDD inside the enclosure was OK and I bought another enclosure that comes with a fan to use with it. I'll be avoiding fan-less external drives until external SDDs of the same capacity become more affordable.
