Favorite Switches of all time? Check. (Gateron Browns. Quieter than regular browns. Better feeling than Cherry's). Amazing keycaps? Check. Double shot PBT in "Dolch" their homage to someone else's color combo. Great looking. Bereft of space keyboard nonsense? Check. There's no scifi font on these. No edgy anything. Just amazing looking, awesome feeling PBT keycaps. The kind that inspire confidence, and create speed. The terrible off the shelf blutooth module cheap mechanicals use? Yes. It's here. And the blutooth is not great. BUT they include a brilliant 2.4ghz dongle. It uses less energy than the blutooth so your battery will last longer. No brainer. You can also turn off the disco light show with Fn + "<" key if you just want backlighting for your keys and aren't needing a rainbow breathing animation for your typing. Very nice touch. USB-C? Check. And they include a cable! And all of this for a price that even just a year ago would have gotten you a weird keyboard with out of order media keys, or the dreaded space font, with a dated mini-USB connector, or the micro-usb one that breaks easily. This is everything you want in once place. Great switches, great compatibility, easy charging, easy wireless, outstanding keycaps, and on top of it all, a 3500mAH rechargeable battery built in.I don't see a reason to even buy anything else. You can even hot swap the switches. Don't like Gateron? (why?) you could swap them or replace one in ten years when one breaks. This is it. I can't find a single thing to complain about. That's rare. This is the little tossable mechanical you can pick up with one hand that has a long lasting battery and the best typing feel possible to buy. This is perfect for me. I can see mounting one of these on an arm for my gaming chair. I can see me buying more of these to put away.Well done Royal Kludge!Summary: For me, this keyboard was a 3.5 / 5. I'll round up to 4 stars since it was 10% off when I bought it, but honestly, I couldn't even recommend it at that price (~$65). After factoring in the need to buy replacement keycaps, and the headache that came with the software support, it was definitely worth paying the extra $10 for a higher quality board with all of the same (and even some missing) features.--------I'll start with the flaws:* Minus one star for terrible software support and out-of-the-box performance.* Minus half a star for the cheap OPAQUE keycaps and RGB.Firstly, out-of-the-box, the firmware needed to be upgraded on my board. Without the firmware upgrade, my F-keys, custom macros and even RGB weren't working properly. I couldn't use F-keys at all actually, which was a big issue considering I dual-boot and navigate through BIOS once or twice a day. Good luck pressing that F11 button in the 3 seconds you're given.I bought my unit in June of 2021 (a few months after release?), yet the firmware on my keyboard was so old that the software provided didn't even detect the keyboard (and yes, I checked product IDs with device manager just to ensure I was using the correct software). It's also pretty shady that the software for this model isn't even offered on the official RK website. But don't you dare try using the RK68 software. Even though it is a similar board, if you flash that firmware on this board, you will pretty much render it useless and need to return it. Instead, you'll have to check through the product description on here and download the keyboard software through Google Drive links. Feels a little shady, right? After installing and uninstalling different versions of the software over the course of a few hours (spread across 2 days and multiple computer restarts), my keyboard was finally detected, updated and I could use it to its full potential. But all of that work to update the firmware just.. shouldn't have to happen. I have had more expensive AND less expensive boards that just don't require that much work. Either the keyboard is plug and play. Or you go to the official website, download the software, click update firmware, and keep it moving. This RK software (and software support) is just abysmal. Good luck contacting them through Amazon and email for software support, considering their website doesn't even recognize the software as existing.Second: The keycaps and RGB are low quality. If this is your first "gaming", custom or "mid-range" keyboard, you may not notice how bad these keycaps are. If you play at night or you are used to mid to higher-end keyboards, you probably will. The included keycaps are not backlit, not double shot, and extremely light. Some others have had issues with chips in theirs, but luckily I did not. The RGB has a bunch of customization (that is, if you can update your firmware), but is nowhere near bright enough to help you see the key lettering during nighttime use. I ended up buying a set of double shot backlit keycaps, which helped a bunch. But even then, comparing to my Vissles and Razer keyboards, the RGB is just... meh. Pretty much on par with $40 Red Dragon keyboards. If you are used to higher-quality RGB, don't expect that here. If you expect to depend on the RGB to see the keys you press, don't expect that here. The colors aren't deep and the brightness is lacking even at its highest setting.Ending on a brighter note though, the red switches feel great. I was using a Razer Hunstman TKL before picking up the RK G68, and honestly, I can say that I prefer the G68 switches. The board is extremely compact and has a good weight to it, which is an even bigger bonus. Height was perfect for me, but for those of you that aren't used to boards with bigger batteries (or higher stands), you may want to look into getting a wrist rest. No issues with keycap swapping, and after I was able to update the keyboard firmware, customization and macro use were really nice. I didn't get a chance to use Bluetooth, so can't comment there.Shortly after ordering the G68 (and spending an extra $20 on replacement keycaps), I saw a deal on a similar keyboard (albeit 87 keys instead of 64) for ~$10 more from Vissles. I ended up returning this board and going with that, and I am extremely glad I made that decision. I can't recommend picking up the G68 at the $65-70 price unless you are 100% sure you will not need F-keys or Macros, you won't be using the keyboard in the dark, and you don't care about RGB. If you are concerned with any of these things, look elsewhere or proceed with caution. My first entry into the mechanical keyboard world was Royal Kludge RK61 wired version which I bought primarily for gaming on my PC. After a few months of use I came to the conclusion that simply I cannot live without the delete key (I use arrows very rarely, so this was no big deal for me). After browsing through few 65% keyboard I stumbled on this model, one of the thing that to me was important was the USB passthrough in which I can attack my wireless adapters through keyboard (I use the keyboard wired since I see no reason for keyboards to be wireless, only if you use them at the distance). The keyboard is good quality with PBT keycaps which are double - shot to my knowledge, the switches are not Gateron like in previous models both RK homemade switches which are fine by me. The typing experience is a lot better then on the previous model I purchased since the switches are factory lubed and foam is in the keyboard also. Bluetooth connectivity is a nice option for work or general home use, while 2.4GHz connection will be enough if you do not play competitive games like CSGO, Fortnite, Valorant or other. The RGB is nice (in my opinion it is better since its backlight which is just simply sweet). As I wrote on the headline my journey is finished I have found the keyboard size that is just right for me, and brown switches simply combine the best of blues and reds. Look no further dead users, I recommend this boardP.S: The official software can only be used on wired mode only, which is a bummer, both no big deal!My complaints are small, first off is that the signal to the usb dongle is way shorter than the Bluetooth range. I use this on my steam deck when it’s docked and the usb dongle looses connection at about 3 feet of range while the Bluetooth rocks a solid 20ft.Secondly I can’t find the software as easily as literally every other rk keyboard, I did find software for this size but only the version that has blue LEDs only not the RGB version.Other wise great lay out, I wanted something smaller but w the arrow keys and top row of numbers so it fulfilled that criteria lol.
