This external hard drive gets a 4 star rating through no fault of its own: I did not notice that the drive came with only 1 USB slot. It's not a regular USB slot either, the USB (male to male) cable I bought before the unit was delivered was of no use and using it with a USB hub was difficult because I didn't have the odd slot that the hard disk used, nor did I have the USB male to female converter.Otherwise the drive runs great, works out of the box with my iMac and macbook pro (Mid 2009). Just upgraded to Mavericks and no issues as well. Runs fast, silently and without fuss. I didn't run the accelerator software for fear of messing up the hard drive, but my experience with the plain vanilla has no issues at all! Great bang for buck, I thought the price per TB was about the best out there apart from the Seagate drives which get absolutely terrifying reviews.Having used an Apple Time Capsule 2TB for years, I can safely say the WD My Book Studio is much more fuss free experience (mixing networking with a hard drive is just setting yourself up for unnecessary trouble in my opinion), and runs with much less heat. It became an issue particularly when my ISP decided to pull a stunt by insisting on using their provided modem and router. Not the Time Capsule's fault, but its bridging mode doesn't work with all routers. I was left with a redundant router that I could connect to via WIFI without running into DNS and IP issues! That's to say nothing of how WIFI doesn't handle 2 different connections at the same time. I ended up using the Time Capsule as a desktop external hard drive and that's where it really failed to shine compared to the WD My Book Studio.Time will tell if the drive works as advertised without needing any replacements, and maybe then I'll consider upping it to a 5 star. Otherwise registration for warranty was a breeze and can be done via the provided software already in the drive. The white operation light is not bright and does not affect my sleep (albeit my computer being across the room), but I figured it could be an issue for some. Why not just use the regular small LED indicator? I thought someone was trying to be a little too clever here.I used it laying down. It does not come with any type of stand and honestly looks like an accident waiting to happen standing there on its own. There's 4 stubs to lift it off the surface slightly but it hardly contributes to stability. Not a biggie, but the drive looks much better just standing upright. In hindsight, I would go for the variant that has more USB slots. Otherwise the speeds of USB 2.0 served me just fine. Perhaps I'm not really a power user, just using it for general media backup for my computers have more working space. So the speed or reported lack thereof didn't bother me. Don't buy into every other review tearing into it for being slow!
